Pecan is an American tree first known to the Europeans in the 16th century; the Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca was first to write about this plant. The name pecan comes from the Algonquian Native American word paccan, which means "hard-shelled nut"(despite its name it is very easy to open by hand). The Spanish brought the pecan into Europe, Asia, and Africa at the beginning of the 16th century.
